primary colour

/praɪmri ˈkʌlə/ (say pruymree 'kuluh)

noun
a colour belonging to a group of colours which is regarded as generating all colours. The additive primary colours are red, green and blue since light of these wavelengths, properly selected and mixed, can produce any hue, even white. In mixing dyes and pigments the colours act subtractively; the subtractive primary colours are loosely named as red, yellow, and blue, but properly the red must be a purple and the blue must be a blue-green. More than 100 different hues have been detected in the spectrum, but only four of them (red, yellow, green, and blue) contain no suggestion of another hue. From the viewpoint of sensation, therefore, these four may be considered primary colours. To these, white and black may be added for the same reason.
Also, primary color.
